Reviving your home in 2013

There is no better time of year than now to revive your home. The more work you put in now, the more you can enjoy your home in the soon to arrive spring/summer months. It doesn’t matter what level of revival you are going for, it all helps you and your family enjoy your home more.

Why Now is the Time to do it

Now is the perfect time to make changes and do a bit of DIY for a number of reasons. Firstly it’s a relatively quiet time of the year. The holiday season is well and truly over and spring is still a few months off. Using the next few weeks to sort out your home will allow you to focus on your project, without distraction from other engagements. Secondly now is also a great time of year for deals and savings on home improvement products and equipment. Winter sales are still going on and if you shop around, in store & on the web, you will be able to find everything you need at a reduced price.

Where to Get Supplies

Every home improvement project is different, as are the supplies you will need, but you can usually get supplies from a number of places. The first place to look is online as this is where you will find not only online deals but also in store discounts from the major suppliers. The web is also a great place to find DIY information and tips and details of the equipment you might need. What you can’t get cheaper online, get in store.

When it comes to large, expensive equipment it may be better to hire it, as this way you will save a lot of money. Things like wallpaper strippers, floor sanders, drills, tile cutters and paint sprayers can all be hired for a fraction of the purchase price.

What to Do

It really is up to you! If you have a lot of spare time, then why not undertake an ambitious revamp project? If your time is limited then even just a lick of paint will go a long way. Try to stick within your abilities as you don’t want to end up with your house looking worse than it did when you started. You don’t need to limit your activities to the interior of your home either. Repaint the exterior and do some work on the garden. The possibilities are endless and it’s your home, so make it your perfect home.

Use What you Already have

If you are on a tight budget then you can improve your home by emphasising what you already have. For example, sanding and varnishing wooden floorboards is much cheaper than getting new ones. Shampooing your carpets will make them look virtually new. Removing grout from in-between tiles then cleaning the tiles, replacing the odd broken ones will make it look like you have retiled. Painting over old fashioned wallpaper isn’t the best approach but it can be done if you can’t remove the wallpaper and it will bring your home up to date. Outdoors why not hire a pressure washer and clean up your driveway or patio? Repaint doors and windows. Put down new gravel. Even simply trimming hedges, clearing out weeds and cutting the grass will improve the appearance of your home. Hire the equipment you need to save money.

There are hundreds of little things you can do for a small amount of money, and collectively they will bring a new lease of life to your house. The more time you put in now, the less you will have to do later on in the year.
