Everybody knows that moving home is a very stressful time in your life and it doesn’t get easier the more you do it. No matter how often you change properties, there are always things that you forget to do and people that you forget to inform but that’s understandable with everything that’s going on at this time.
In order for you to be able to concentrate on more important things, here is a check list to make sure that you tell all the necessary parties of your new address. It can be really frustrating if you get six months down the line and you are still finding out people have your old address so it’s best to get it done as soon as possible, even before you move in some cases.
The Bank – You may think that this would be the first thing people do but it can still be over looked. Don’t worry if you have more than one account though because they will all be changed with just one simple phone call to inform them of your new address.
Don’t forget to update bank account information on any sites such as Amazon or PayPal for which your card details are stored on their database. If your stored cardholder’s address suddenly doesn’t match up with the address the bank has, there could be problems with your orders.
Amenity Companies – Depending on which companies you are with for your water, gas and electric, there will be a standard period of notice that you have to give prior to leaving your property. Giving this information well in advance will not just comply with their regulations but also prevent you from having to pay any charges which you yourself haven’t incurred.
TV/Broadband Companies – Although the chances are you will not want to cancel these services just because you are moving, they will still need to be told of your new address. This way they may be able to postpone your service and payment until you are up and running in your new home and save you a bit of money.
It may be worth looking into which digital TV services are enabled in your new house. It might seem strange in this day and age but some buildings may not be set up to deal with certain company’s services.
Removal Companies – It’s hard to believe that even in the 21st century, when we have services to make everything easier for us, people still attempt to do their own removals. If you really want to take the stress out of your moving day then hiring a removal company to the hard work for you is definitely the way to go.
Ask around to see if anyone can recommend a good service because if you live in a large city like London, it can be hard to sift through the numerous London removal companies to find one that is suited to you.
DVLA – You will need to inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency of your planned move so that they can update the registered address of your car or other vehicle. This may incur a small fee but is a legal requirement and failing to do so may lead to problems when you come to tax or insure your car.
Doctor and Dentist – Regardless of how often we use them, the doctor and the dentist are two of the most important services in your community so they will need to be able to contact you at your new address.
If you are moving away from your current area and out of the catchment zone for your existing practises then you will need to find new ones. Speak to your current doctor or dentist as they may be able to recommend someone.
Prepaid Delivery Services – If you have services such as Love Film that are automatically set up to be sent to your home then you will need to change them. This may involve them being paused for a couple of days while the changeover occurs but at least your disks will be going to the right place. Also remember to change stored details that may be on your most used takeaway websites. The last thing you want is for your food to be accepted by the grateful recipient at your old home.
Friends and Family – Arguably the most obvious party on the list and I almost left it off all together because of this but, in the grand scheme of things, these are probably going to be the last people on you plan to tell in order of importance.
Close friends and family will probably already know of your planned move and it will give you a good opportunity to pick and choose the others that you want to stay in contact with.
This is by no means an exhaustive list so if you can think of any more please add them in the comments underneath.
